Snapshots from FuZhou

We went to FuZhou late April/early May for about two weeks.  I have a few quick photos from our time there:

Lots of people on Nan Hou Jie on Labor Day (5/1).  I think it's International Labor Day, but I'm not totally sure.

Library in FuZhou.  The sign says "FuJian Library for Youth and Children".

Street-washing truck (the building in the background is an idol temple).  It spews out water on the street.  None of the cars seem to pay any attention to it; they just drive through.
(It also plays music, so you can be aware of its approaching.  However, the music sounds similar to that of an ice cream truck's, so it is easy to get confused about whether an ice cream truck or street-washing truck is coming.)

Subway in China.  The Chinese words under the sign say "sa bai wei".

The National Bible Bee 2016

The National Bible Bee Competition ( www.biblebee.org ) this year took place in San Antonio, Texas, November 16-20.  My sister and I were competing in the Junior division and my two younger siblings in the Primary division. My family drove across two states to Texas in our eight-passenger van packed with our personal belongings and a good amount of cookware (my brother has severe allergy to soy, eggs, milk, nuts, and peanuts, so we have to cook all his food).  We took a one-night stop in El Paso before continuing on to San Antonio. Registration (Wed. 11/16) When we arrived in San Antonio, I didn't feel much of the "Bible Bee spirit" yet; it was more like living in a dream.  Until Wednesday afternoon, that is. Welcome in Israel

We left for Tel Aviv, Israel early one morning.  Our flight was at noon. Right before we checked in our baggage and got our boarding passes, a representative from the ElעלAlאל Airlines (Israeli) asked us a few questions about where we were going in Israel, why we were going, what we'd do, where we'd stay, etc. and about our check-in baggage.  After the bags were packed had they passed through hands other than ours?  Had anyone asked us to deliver/take something to Israel for them?  Were there any weapons in our belongings? After we answered these questions the representative took a piece of paper from a stack, wrote something on it, and circled one of the four letters printed on the top of the paper.  We wondered what it meant. As we waited to board the plane we saw two men putting on their tefillin  and praying towards Jerusalem.  We also saw a couple Orthodox Jews.  Almost all of them wore different hats (some wore kippahs ; others ...

Windsor, CA

On the Way to Windsor I opened my eyes and checked my watch —5:45am.  July 5, 2016.  Time to get up. Dad had planned a family vacation for all of us.  We'd drive from Orange, CA to Windsor, CA, where we'd stay for two days and three nights.  Then on Friday we'd drive up to Klamath Falls, OR to stay for four days and five nights.  On our return trip we planned to stop for a day at Angels Camp, then take the trip back to Orange on the fifteenth. The plan was to leave home at five or six in the morning and arrive at Windsor in the afternoon.  I had packed our luggage last night (along with my own backpack) and Dad had loaded both onto our silver-colored van. The drive along I-5 North was long and dreary.  We listened to sermons and music along the way (I had the tune and lyrics of "Hava Nagila", a song in Hebrew, ringing in my ears), but it didn't help much to pass the time.  I was lost in thought as we cruised down the traffic-less fr...
